Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery is an option that we offer our cataract patients. Dr. Drew Chronister was one of the first femto-certified cataract surgeons in Chester County, now regularly offers this technology at our surgery center, Vision One Laser and Surgery Center, in Exton.
Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in all of medicine and also one of the safest. It involves removing the natural lens that has become cloudy as we age and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens implant to restore your vision. If you opt to have laser-assisted cataract surgery, your surgeon will use the laser to do portions of the procedure that have previously been done manually.
This refractive cataract laser can perform several of the most critical steps of cataract surgery:
1. The primary incision
2. The anterior capsulotomy that involves making an opening in the lens capsule to allow the surgeon access to the body of the lens
3. Softening of the cataract to decrease the energy required for removal
4. Making laser incisions on the cornea to correct for a mild amount of astigmatism.
The laser uses integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) to capture precise, high-resolution images of your eye. These images and the data they provide allow the doctor to perform a customized surgery on your eyes making cataract surgery even more accurate and safe.
